Pregnancy Twubbles

The biological changes that come with pregnancy sometimes create discomforts for Moms-to-be.

As your baby grows inside, he can t help but press on some of your internal organs. Further, surges of hormones present during pregnancy can also contribute to some discomfort.

From the top to bottom of you, you will hopefully only experience occasionally the three mischievous sisters of pregnancy: Nausea, Constipation and Heartburn.

Strange Pregnancy Fact

Some percentage of Dads to Be experience couvades syndrome (from the French, to hatch ). Symptoms include weight gain, nose bleeds and frequent food cravings.

Nausea, sometimes occurring with vomiting, is often the first sign you re pregnant. Not so neat-o to feel it every morning, as some (but not all luckily) experience.

To fend off slight nausea:

  • Eat whole wheat dry toast or crackers
  • Try to eat smaller meals, but eat more frequently.

Constipation. The culprit behind constipation complaints is an increase in the hormone progesterone, which slows the movement of food through your digestive tract. This problem may be compounded later in pregnancy by the pressure of your growing uterus on your rectum.

To fend off constipation:

  • Eat a high fiber diet
  • Keep hydrated by drinking 8 glasses of water per day
  • Exercise (check in with your doctor, of course, on that)

Heartburn. Feel a funny burning sensation in your chest? That s probably Heartburn (also called acid indigestion or acid reflux).

During pregnancy, the placenta produces the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the smooth muscles of the uterus. This hormone also relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach, allowing gastric acids to seep back up, which causes that unpleasant burning sensation. So not to worry- this is all just a temporarily condition of pregnancy.

To fend off heartburn:

  • Before exercising, wait 1-2 hrs after eating
  • To lessen the acid reflux, eat while sitting up
  • Avoid extra spicy or greasy foods
