The Battle Inside Your Body: Free Radicals vs. Antioxidants
Free radicals are the “bad guys,” unstable molecules that enter your body just looking for a fight. They wreak havoc on cells and have been implicated in all kinds of crimes against your good health, like arthritis, premature aging, cataracts, and even heart disease and cancer.
Antioxidants are “good guys” like secret agents whose job it is to keep those delinquent free radicals on the run. But the good agents need help. Once you reach adulthood (generally your late-teens or early-twenties) your body stops producing enough antioxidants on its own. To fight the free radicals, you need to ingest fresh fruits and vegetables, which are high in antioxidants. It turns out that organic fresh fruits and vegetables are some of the best sources of antioxidants, helping to deter the negative effects of free radicals in your body, as long as the right kinds are selected and eaten raw or are cooked properly.
